Mothers’ Meeting

Many mothers of children with disabilities live in deep isolation. Day after day, they remain at home, caring for their child through long days and even longer nights. They face social suspicion, shame, and at times even feelings of guilt — as though they are being punished for giving birth to a child with special needs.

To offer encouragement and connection, our social worker organised a special gathering called “Mothers Together”. Six mothers were invited to attend with their children. Two young volunteers assisted by caring for the children, allowing the mothers to take part in a session led by the Women’s Health Project team.

The meeting began with an icebreaker game. Each mother was asked to share a few words about a topic written on a card. Yet, almost instinctively, many spoke about their children rather than themselves. They are simply not accustomed to anyone showing genuine interest in them as individuals.

One of the trainers reflected afterwards, “They have no life of their own anymore. Everything revolves around their child — constant worry and the feeling of being overwhelmed.”

Later in the session, the mothers were invited to share their personal stories. At first, the trainers were unsure whether it might be too soon or too sensitive. But when one mother began to speak, the others listened with deep empathy. One by one, each mother opened her heart, and many tears were shed that afternoon.

By the end of the meeting, it was clear that these six mothers wanted to continue meeting regularly. For them, it was a rare and precious experience — to be open, to be accepted, and to feel truly understood. The volunteers, too, were deeply moved by what they witnessed.
