When the Past Knocked on the Door

Muneeb* grew up admiring his father, a disciplined and honorable military officer whose presence filled their home with pride. As a child, Muneeb watched him leave for work in his crisp uniform, believing his father was the strongest man in the world. But in 2014, when ISIS seized control of Mosul, that world collapsed. His father left for work one morning and never returned. No message, no explanation, no body. Just silence.

The disappearance shattered Muneeb. The uncertainty was a wound that never healed. He tried to bury the pain, convincing himself that forgetting was the only way to survive.

Despite the turmoil in his life, Muneeb kept pushing forward. He studied diligently, earned a place at university, and eventually secured a promising government job working on the 2018 political elections. For the first time in years, it felt like life was finally turning in his favor. After completing an interim contract, he knew he would soon be eligible for a long-term government position. But when the time came to submit the list of candidates, Ali, his supervisor, removed Muneeb’s name and replaced it with someone else. Ali never explained why. Muneeb was shocked and angry; he had worked hard and performed well. Losing the chance at a permanent contract, especially one with a high salary, felt like another door closing just as his future seemed to be opening.

The opportunity he had worked so hard for vanished overnight. For eight long years, Muneeb carried the weight of that betrayal. He struggled to find work, grew resentful, and allowed bitterness toward Ali to harden inside him. All the while, he continued to grieve the loss of his father, feeling the growing pressure of being the sole provider for his family. The pain of his past and the injustice of his present intertwined, leaving him exhausted, angry, and deeply burdened.

Everything began to change when Muneeb attended Operation Mercy’s character development training. The sessions on forgiveness, effective listening, and self-awareness stirred something deep within him. After the second day, while standing alone in the shower, the teachings washed over him. Memories, emotions, and years of suppressed pain surged to the surface. Muneeb broke down in tears, realizing how heavily unforgiveness had been crushing him.

On the final day of the training, he stood before the group and publicly declared that he had forgiven Ali—for the sake of God and for the sake of his own peace. He also went home and apologized to his wife and mother for past misunderstandings, and in doing so, felt a renewed sense of calm settle over his life. His relationship with God deepened, and those around him noticed a new lightness in his spirit.

Two months later, during a home visit, Muneeb appeared genuinely joyful, calm, centered, and at peace. But life had one more test waiting for him.

Just three days after that visit, Ali—the same man who had cost Muneeb his job seven years earlier—walked into Muneeb’s workplace, where Muneeb now volunteers with an NGO that helps people find employment. Ali wasn’t there to confront him or revisit the past. He simply needed help registering his daughter.

Muneeb did not hesitate. He greeted Ali with respect, shook his hand, and kindly directed him to the person who could assist with the registration. There was no bitterness, no hesitation, only sincerity.

In that moment, Muneeb proved that his forgiveness was real. It wasn’t just words spoken at a training session. It was a transformation lived out in the quiet, unexpected moments of everyday life.
